Physical Education & Sport

We love sport at EPS! The PE and Sport Education program at EPS is comprehensive, challenging and fun. It provides students with the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary for the pursuit of lifelong involvement in physical activity through the development of fundamental motor skills, movement competence and physical fitness.

Prep-Year 2

The focus of Physical Education in Prep – Year 2 is to develop the fundamental motor skills of the run, catch, ball bounce, leap, dodge, vertical jump, kick, punt kick, overarm throw, forehand strike and two-hand side-arm strike. The skills are taught by way of modelling, inquiry and through minor games. In addition, Prep students participate in a weekly Perceptual Motor Skills Program (PMP), and all students at EPS participate in a swimming program.

Year 3-6

The focus of Physical Education in Years 3 – 6 is to continue developing the fundamental motor skills through major games and learning the rules of games. Guided inquiry and problem solving are also integrated into the program.

For 30 years a weekly fitness jogging/walking 300km club has been operating and parents are encouraged to participate. Students receive certificates and trophies at school assemblies to acknowledge their dedication to their personal fitness.

Intra and inter-school sport

Students in Years 3 & 4 participate in weekly intra-school sport while Years 5 & 6 students participate in inter-school sport as part of the Balaclava District Primary Schools’ Sports Association.

Inter-school summer sports are cricket, basketball, hockey, softball and volleystars. Winter sports are football, soccer, netball and teeball. Term 4 sports are European handball, touch, rounders and sofcrosse.

Students in Years 3 – 6 participate in the EPS Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals.

Children in Years 4 – 6 participate in the House Athletics Carnival and the Hooptime Basketball Tournament. They are also offered the opportunity to participate in the Snowsports competition at Mt Buller.
